How do I properly maintain my chain?

Please visit our chain maintenance page.

D.I.D does not recommend maintaining any drive chain with kerosene. Use of X-/Ring/O-Ring safe cleaners and lubricants is highly recommended.

Cleaning a sealed chain with kerosene would cause deformation of the seal ring and can oftentimes lead to rusting of a chain due to the removal of grease on the chain’s surface, which increases the risk of chain corruption and chain failure. It is highly likely that use of kerosene on a sealed drive chain will drastically decrease the chains performance.

For cleaning and lubricating, D.I.D recommends use of exclusive oils that state to be seal-ring safe to properly maintain any drive chain.

Clean the chain by wiping with a soft cloth dampened with an O-Ring/X-Ring® safe cleaner and dry completely every 300miles (500kms) to prevent surface rust and ensures maximum performance. To protect X-Ring®, never use steam, thinner or such volatile solvents as gasoline or benzene, and a wire bush as well. Lube the chain every other use with an O-Ring/X-Ring safe lubricant.

When shall I replace my chain?

Please visit our chain maintenance page.

Chains are consumerables and require changing every so often. Frequency is depending on many factors, but below are tale signs that replacement is needed.

A chain's pin heads should remain in place and should not rotate. Once the pin heads have began to rotate, this is a sign of wear and it is time to think of replacing your chain.

D.I.D's recommended wear & elongation replacement time is 1% for sealed chains and 2% for non-sealed chain. (5-pitch Sealed = .75” of 120L chain. 5-pitch Non-Sealed = 1.5” of 120L chain.)

Rust, stiffness, or missing X-Rings are other signs of replacement time. These may cause the chain to break prematurely, excessive elongation, or abnormal noise during use, please replace the chain and sprockets at the same time.

Connecting Links; What do I need?

D.I.D offers 3 types of connecting links; RJ, FJ, and ZJ.

RJ type links are what we call a loose-clip type link. The side plate may be pressed on and the clip will slide into the grooves very easily. This type is typically included with non-sealed chains.

FJ type links are what we call press-fit-clip type links. These require a tool to more easily and evenly press on the side plate. The clip may be slid into the grooves easily. This type is typically included with sealed chain.

ZJ type links are rivet-styled links in which the pin heads will have to be peened or riveted to secure the side plate in place. A tool is needed for this type to press on the side plate, as well as rivet the pin heads.

The D.I.D KM500R chain tool is a 3-in-1 tool that cuts chains, presses on the side plate, and rivets the pin heads.

How do I replace my OEM chain or purchase a replacement connecting link?

OEM products are unfortunately not made available for aftermarket purchase. OEM products are designed and manufactured on an order basis from various bike manufacturers, so checking with your local dealer is the best option for finding spare OEM connecting links.

Can I mix and match connecting links with different chain models?

NO. Each chain model has specific dimensions and material compositions that give them their unique characteristics. Because of varying specs, connecting links aren't interchangeable between models and purchasing model specific connecting links is necessary.
